The project “Viruses and human milk: transmission or protection”, co-funded by FondazioneIolandaMinoli, Milano, is carried out by an interdisciplinary research team, involving ISPA CNR researchers, led by Laura Cavallarin, virologists, led byDavid Lembo,Head of the Molecular Virology lab at the Department of Clinical and Biological Sciences of the University of Torino, and neonatologists, led by Enrico Bertino, Head of the Neonatology Unit at the University of Torino and by Guido Moro, President of the Italian Human Milk Banks Association (AIBLUD).
The research has already brought important evidences, such as those concerning the inactivating properties of human milk against a number of viruses that represent a threat for children (i.e. cytomegalovirus, rotavirus, respiratory syncytial virus)and the identification of novel antiviral compounds in human milk.
